Across the Chesapeake Bay, the slender peninsula known as Virginia's Eastern Shore offers a chance to experience Chincoteague, a place best known in children's literature. Delve into the world of the little pony that has captured imaginations for half a century through the book, Misty of Chincoteague. Learn all about it a the Chincoteague Pony Center.
On Assateague Island, you can go in search of the famous ponies on foot, by bike or on a guided bus tour. Kids might want to try crabbing in the inlet, too!
Going south from Chincoteague, stop at the Eastern Shore Railway Museum in Parksley.
Keep going south and take a sidewalk tour of Accomac, the village that has more restored colonial architecture than anywhere in the United States, except for Colonial Williamsburg.
Farther south is Onancock, a picturesque bayside village founded in 1680 as Port Scarburgh.
Hop aboard a ferry for a cruise to Tangier Island. This small island situated in the Chesapeake Bay is a quiet family getaway. Notice a hint of an Elizabethan accent as you talk with the residents, and chat with the island's teenagers about their experiences growing up on the island. Get your fill of fresh crab and fish. Wander around the small island where bikes and golf carts are the primary mode of transportation.
Back on the Eastern Shore, travel down to Kiptopeke State Park and the Eastern Shore of Virginia National Wildlife Refuge. The refuge has interactive exhibits, wildlife viewing area, foot trails, and a photography blind.
