In Southern Virginia, start in Mecklenburg County, which can serve as a central hub of the region.
In Clarksville, visit Virginia's largest lake — Buggs Island Lake — where you can enjoy water sports, hiking, bicycling and camping. Occoneechee State Park is another spot for outdoor fun. And don't miss the Visitor Center & Native American Museum there.
Going east from Clarksville to Rawlings in Brunswick County is Lake Rawlings with its clear water lake for SCUBA diving and snorkeling.
Going west from Clarksville is South Boston, home of the South Boston Speedway, a NASCAR-sanctioned track where Elliott and Hermie Sadler and Ward & Jeff Burton got their starts.
While in South Boston, your family might enjoy the Shangrila Equestrian Retreat with horseback and wagon rides. Packages include lodging, meals, horses and tack, plus guided trail rides.
Travel on State Highway 58 to Danville and see the Danville Science Center and its spectacular Butterfly Station, as well as lots of other hands-on exhibits that encourage all ages to unlock the secrets of how things work!
The AAF Tank Museum is also in Danville for the military enthusiasts in the family. Plus, it has a great PX store with great artifacts, toys, models and books.
Also, just outside of Danville in Alton, visit the Virginia International Raceway, one of the premier motorsports facilities in America. VIR's world-class Plantation Valley Kart Track offers four-wheeled fun for all ages!
From Danville, go west to the Virginia Museum of Natural History in Martinsville. See the museum's permanent exhibits: Age of Reptiles, Age of Mammals, Rock Hall of Fame, Earthquakes of Virginia as well as other cool stuff for kids — The Skeleton Closet, Virginia's Recognized Indian Tribes and Dinosaur Gallery!
Martinsville Speedway is another NASCAR-sactioned track with Martinsville Grand Prix Go Karts nearby for the kids . . . and older drivers, too!
