More
than half the major battles of the Civil War were fought on Virginia soil.
The site of the first major land battle at Manassas or "Bull Run,"
as well as one of the bloodiest battles at Marye's Heights, are in Virginia.
The general commanding Confederate forces, Robert E. Lee, had the unique
distinction of being first asked to command the opposing federal army,
which he declined because he would not raise his hand against his native
Virginia.
The
feature film "Gods and Generals" features these battles and
was filmed in Virginia. You
can win a 3-day/2-night vacation package
to the Lexington, Virginia to tour in
the footsteps of "Stonewall" Jackson and Robert E. Lee, prominent
figures of the Civil War and featured in the film, courtesy of Traveling
America . See the package details here.
Every
entry will also receive a free information packet on Virginia Civil
War sites, attractions and activities, special offers, and Virginia’s
history, uniquely interpreted and preserved, by the Virginia
Civil War Trails.
