Annual Chincoteague Pony Swim

  •

    Go, Ponies, Go!

The Coastal Virginia - Eastern Shore region is home to a most unusual pony event that's famous around the world. Come, see this decades old tradition unfold!

Every July, saltwater cowboys round up the wild ponies from Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge on Assateague Island and let them swim across the channel to Chincoteague Island, where they rest before being herded down Main Street to the carnival grounds. This event was made even more popular by author Marguerite Henry who wrote Misty of Chincoteague and other books about the wild ponies.

When the ponies make it to the carnival grounds, a set number are auctioned off to pony lovers from around the world. It's your chance to take home a piece of Misty history, or at least witness these beauties first hand.
