Newport News is centrally located on the Virginia Peninsula in Hampton Roads region and bounded on the west by the James River and on the south by Hampton Roads Harbor.

The Peninsula Fine Arts Center in Newport News features cultural performances such as the Virginia Symphony and the Virginia Opera. The city also supports an active recreational program at Newport News Park, the largest municipal park east of the Mississippi, offers boating, fishing, camping, biking, hiking, tennis and golf.
