Albemarle County

Albemarle County is located in the Central Virginia region just east of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The county surrounds the city of Charlottesville, home of the University of Virginia.

Albemarle County is widely recognized as rich in history and beauty. Among its historic attractions are Monticello, home to President Thomas jefferson, and Ash Lawn/Highland, home to President James Monroe and his wife, Dolley. The University of Virginia presents a wide range of cultural activities open to the public, such as concerts, lectures, performances and collegiate sporting events throughout the year.

Recreational opportunities abound within the region, too, such as three regional parks offering swimming, fishing, boating and hiking. The Shenandoah National Park runs along the county's western edge and offers camping and hiking in the midst of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Albemarle is home to many equestrian events, such as steeplechase races and polo matches.
