Highland County, Virginia:

Highland County is located in the Allegheny Mountains in the Shenandoah Valley region of Virginia. It is bounded on the west by West Virginia.

For outdoors enthusiasts, the county features the Highland Wildlife Management Area in the George Washington National Forest. Visitors can fish for trout in the Jackson and Bullpasture Rivers, which have been stocked.

Civil War buffs can enjoy McDowell Battlefield, where Gen. Stonewall Jackson achieved his first victory. The Highland County Museum & Heritage Center is in the house that served as a hospital during that war.

Two of Virginia's most popular events take place in the county, Highland County Fall Foliage Festival every October and the Highland's Maple Festival in March.
