Pittsylvania County is in the Southern Virginia region. The North Carolina state line forms its southern boundary. The county is part of the Danville metropolitan area.
Two major lakes, Smith Mountain Lake and Leesville Lake are located in the northeastern section of the county. These lakes provide a vast amount of water-related recreation, including boating, swimming, fishing, paddlesports and camping. The 2,710-acre White Oak Wildlife Management Area offers outstanding hunting grounds, too.
Callands Clerk's Office, Courthouse & Gaol dates from the Revolutionary War era. And the American Armoured Foundation's Tank Museum is located in Danville.
The Tomahawk Mill Winery in Chatham a 116-year-old historic, water-powered gristmill built by a Confederate soldier. It is open for tours and wine tasting from March 15-Oct. 15.
