Powhatan

Named after Chief Powhatan, the father of Pocahontas, Powhatan County is situated on the western edge of the Richmond metropolitan area in the Central Virginia region. The James River forms the county's northern border, and the Appomattox River runs along much of the southern boundary. Predominately a rural area, there has been growth westward from Richmond.

Outdoors enthusiasts will find Powhatan especially appealing with public boat landings on the James River. Golf and equestrian activities are other popular sports. Oakdale Farm offers beginner to advanced, offers dressage clinics, cross country jumping, indoor and outdoor rings, 130 acres of horse trails as well as a water-training complex.

Fighting Creek Park, a 220-acre complex, is home to the public library, the YMCA, numerous athletic fields and hiking trails.

Belmead Plantation is on the National Register of Historic Places and features 30 miles of equestrial trails.

Powhatan' Festival of the Grape is a popular event every October during Wine Month.
