Prince Edward County is located in the Central Virginia region. Its northern boundary is the Appomattox River, a tributary of the James River.

The county was formed in 1754 and is located at the crossroads of U.S. 460 and U.S. 15.

Hampden-Sydney College, one of the oldest colleges in the United States, and Longwood University are both located in the county and offer numerous cultural activities and NCAA sports events.

Twin Lakes State Park and Bear Creek State Park offer swimming, boating, fishing and camping. The 2,775-acre Briery Creek Wildlife Area, features a stocked lake, Sandy River Reservoir for other water activities.

History in the county features the Robert Russa Moton Museum, which is the national center for Civil Rights in Education. It was the site of the first non-violent student demonstration (1951), an action that led to the Brown vs. Board of education case before the U.S. Supreme Court which mandated equal education for all Americans.
