Suffolk City

The independent city of Suffolk is located in the Hampton Roads region of Virginia. It is bordered on the north by the James River, North Carolina on the south, by Chesapeake and Portsmouth on the east and Isle of Wight and Southampton Counties on the west.

Known worldwide for its annual Suffolk Peanut Festival, the county has numerous resouces for outdoor activities. With lakes covering more than 8,000 acres, fishing is a popular activity as well as boating with access to Hampton Roads harbor, Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. For 111,000 acres of exploration in nature, visit Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge, one of the few remaining American wildernesses. The Great Dismal Swamp provides adventure for all ages. Various poets and writers have written about the swamp’s mysteriousness.

Suffolk is final resting place of many Confederate Generals and soldiers, who laid to rest at Cedar Hill Cemetery. This 32-acre cemetery is an official site of the Virginia Civil War Trails program.

Old Nansemond County Courthouse served as part of Union Army headquarters during the Civil War. Originally built in 1755, this building has been used, burnt and rebuilt multiple times over the past 3 centuries!

During the summer, free music and entertainment is provided at Constant's Wharf every Friday night.
