Wise County, Virginia:

Wise County is in the far western region of Heart of Appalachia. It sits in the midst of the Appalachian Mountains and is primarily rural. The Kentucky state line forms the county's western border.

The Jefferson National Forest occupies more than 33,000 acres in Wise County and provides many opportunities for hiking, fishing, swimming, camping and picnicking. The obersvation tower at High Knob Mountain allows for splendid panoramic views of Virginia, Kentucky and Tennessee!

Mountain Empire Community College and the University of Virginia's College at Wise offer cultural and sporting events. And Big Stone Gap features Trail of the Lonesome Pine Outdoor Drama, Virginia's Official State Outdoor Drama, performed Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights.

Wise County is one of the sites along The Crooked Road: Virginia's Heritage Music Trail with the Country Cabin II in Norton, with its Appalachian Traditions Village, clogging classes and jam sessions. Mountain Music School is offered every summer at Mountain Empire Community College, too.
