Montpelier was the lifelong home of James Madison, president of the United States, Father of the Constitution, and architect of the Bill of Rights. The 2,650-acre estate is nestled in the rolling Blue Ridge Mountains, four miles south of Orange, Virginia. President Madison did some of his most important work at Montpelier, including researching the ideals that became the Constitution of the United States of America.

Following President Madison's death, his wife, Dolley, sold Montpelier and returned to Washington. Montpelier had several owners following the sale, including William and Annie duPont's family. The duPonts owned Montpelier for the majority of the 20th Century and more than doubled the mansion's size. Their daughter, Marion duPont Scott, transformed Montpelier into a world-class thoroughbred racing stable during her tenure.
