Region: Northern Virginia Locality: Arlington County George Washington Memorial Parkway 1 Marshall Drive Arlington, VA 22211 Driving Directions The Netherlands Carillon, a 49-bell tower, is a gift from the Dutch people in gratitude for aid during World War II. Located on Marshall Drive, next to the "Iwo Jima" Memorial, between Route 50 and Arlington National Cemetery. Bring your camera. The rolling greens in front of the Carillon offer a spectacular view of the D.C. skyline including Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument, and U.S. Capitol. The largest bell has a diameter of six feet, nine inches and weighs 12,654 pound; the smallest is nine inches in diameter and weighs 37.5 pounds. Verses cast on each bell were written by Dutch poet, Ben von Eysslesteijn. The open steel tower was designed by Dutch architect Joost W.C. Boks. The carillon is tuned to a chromatic scale and covers one note more than four octaves. It is played with an automatic electronic system.
