Derwent is part of Virginia's Civil War Trails program. After the Civil War, General Robert E. Lee and his family sought "a little, quiet home in the woods" and was offered the use of Derwent by its owners. It is said that from Derwent, General Lee helped the nation heal from the devastation of war through his inspirational and uplifting writings. The Lees were at Derwent from late June 1865 until mid September 1865.
