This 1859 Italian Villa house, also called the Sutherlin Mansion, is best known as the Last Capitol of the Confederacy. The house is one of the finest examples of Italian Villa architecture in Virginia and is listed on the National Register and the Virginia Landmarks Register.
Jefferson Davis resided in this home during the final week of the Civil War. It was here that Davis wrote the last Proclamation to the Confederacy. While in Danville, President Davis and his cabinet received word that Lee had surrendered at nearby Appomattox.
The museum offers tours (docent or audio)of the historic home (fee), a permanent Civil War display and revolving art exhibits (free). There is a Museum Gift Shop.
