Arts Getaway in Floyd: Nurtured by Nature

Virginia is very Artsy!

Shop the galleries and tour artisans' studios during this Floyd Arts Getaway, where handmade arts and crafts range from exquisite woodworking to functional ceramics to elaborate quilts to elegant batik clothing.

Floyd is home to Virginia's first and only residential craft school -- the Jacksonville Center for the Arts -- which is located in a renovated, two-story dairy barn. If you want a dynamic new experience, consider signing up for a one-day or as long as one-week class in clay, glass, blacksmithing or many other crafts. Or if you don't have time for a class, drop by the Hayloft Gallery and the artisans' studios and take home some inspiration or special gifts.

A visit to downtown Floyd is a special treat with local and regional arts available at numerous galleries, such as Over the Moon Gallery with an array of artwork in painting, glass-blowing, woodworking, pottery, metalworking, textile arts, and more. The Bell Gallery and Garden features hand-crafted art, landscape photography and custom framing. And a favorite stop is Carter Holliday Art Gallery featuring Carter's original pieces, which are made up of hand-carved ceramic tiles mixed with finished hardwoods to make a single decorative piece for the home or office.

At night, music is downtown Floyd is something you don't want to miss. Tap your toes at the famed Friday Nite Jamboree at the Floyd Country Store. Enjoy some hand-dipped ice cream and listen to the jam sessions that spill out onto the sidewalks. Another great place to hear music is The Pickin' Porch, where you can purchase handcrafted and vintage acoustic instruments including: guitars, banjos, mandolins, dulcimers, fiddles, ukuleles and more.
