Shenandoah National Park History
Shenandoah National Park is an expanse of majestic land - 197,438.76 acres, to be exact - that includes eight counties: Albemarle (14,681.16 acres), Augusta (12,269.42 acres), Greene (15,284.65 acres), Madison (33,106.22 acres), Page (38,613.77 acres), Rappahannock (31,856.33 acres), Rockingham (37,968.58 acres), and Warren (13,658.63 acres).
Shenandoah National Park exists thanks to Virginians who persevered to establish a National Park in the eastern United States. The Park was authorized May 22, 1926 and established December 26, 1935. President Franklin D. Roosevelt dedicated Shenandoah National Park July 3, 1936.
Four entrances allow visitors to traverse the 105 miles of the scenic Skyline Drive and take in the sites along 75 overlooks. The renowned Appalachian Trail runs 101 of the 518 miles of hiking trails that meander the Park. See a Shenandoah National Park trail map.
