Day 1

  • Bristoe Station Battlefield Heritage Park

    Bristoe Station Battlefield Heritage Park, encompasses 133 acres over two battlefields. The park interprets the 1862 Battle of Kettle Run and the 1863 Battle of Bristoe Station. Self guided trails of 2.7 miles interpret both actions. The park also includes a 1900s Sears and Roebuck house, as well as old homes and barns from the village established here after the war.

    Park is open dawn to dusk. Guided tours are available seasonally and by making an appointment.

    Listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 2002, the Hillsville Historic District is located within the downtown area of Hillsville. This county seat town of Carroll County dates to the formation of the county in 1842. The historic district is comprised of 14 buildings, one object, and covers approximately 50 acres. Key buildings include The Historic Carroll County Courthouse, Hillsville Diner (now oldest continuously operating streetcar diner in the state), Hale-Wilkinson-Carter Home, former 1907 bank building, 1936 jail, two late-19th century buildings, and a row of historic businesses built after the Hillsville Fire of 1931, marked footprint of county's second jail site, and other buildings. The object listed with the district is a Confederate Monument first erected in 1907 - one of made white bronze (zink alloy).

    Occoneechee State Park is along the 50,000-acre Buggs Island Lake. Explore the park's 800 miles of wooded, cove-studded shoreline.     One of few remaining undeveloped areas along the Atlantic coast, False Cape offers a chance to experience nature in a one-of-a kind setting. A huge migratory bird population and a variety of wildlife, plants and trees make the park an outdoor classroom. The park is accessible only by foot, bicycle, beach transporter, tram or boat. Tram transportation through Back Bay Wildlife Refuge is available April through October. Call for tram reservations. Between Nov. 1 and March 31, access to the park is restricted to the beach or via the park’s beach transporter, the Terra-Gator. Call for Terra Gator reservations. Tram or Terra Gator transportation is not available to campers.

    Occoneechee State Park is along the 50,000-acre Buggs Island Lake. Explore the park's 800 miles of wooded, cove-studded shoreline. Occoneechee is ideal for those who enjoy fishing, hunting, camping, hiking, horseback riding and boating. There are 89 campsites, 11 cabins, picnic areas, an amphitheater, wildlife areas, hiking trails and boat launches. Pontoon and fishing boats may be rented. Visit Occoneechee's visitor center and Native American Museum to learn about the area's Native Americans.

    The Pentagon Tours program, under the purview of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs, hosts more than 100,000 visitors annually. The tour lasts for approximately 60 minutes and follows a route that is approximately one and one half miles in length. Each tour includes the mission of the Department of Defense and each of its branches of service, and visits numerous displays that highlight and depict significant moments in military history.


    Public parking is not available at the Pentagon. Visitors may opt to park at the Fashion Centre Mall at Pentagon City. No shuttle service is provided to or from the Pentagon. The Pentagon is less than a five-minute walk from the mall and can be reached through a pedestrian tunnel. Once through the tunnel, look for signs to the Metro entrance.


    Hours: All guided tours of the Pentagon are free and available by reservation only. Tours are conducted Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tours are not conducted on weekends or federal holidays.


    Book a Tour: U.S. Residents can reserve a tour using the website or by contacting their Congressional and Senate Representative. The Congressional office staffs often submit requests for constituents. Tours can be arranged directly through the Pentagon Tour Office using an online reservations system.

    The Blue Ridge Music Center features a state-of-the-art amphitheater on the Blue Ridge Parkway at Milepost 213.     Listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 2002, the Hillsville Historic District is located within the downtown area of Hillsville. This county seat town of Carroll County dates to the formation of the county in 1842. The historic district is comprised of 14 buildings, one object, and covers approximately 50 acres. Key buildings include The Historic Carroll County Courthouse, Hillsville Diner (now oldest continuously operating streetcar diner in the state), Hale-Wilkinson-Carter Home, former 1907 bank building, 1936 jail, two late-19th century buildings, and a row of historic businesses built after the Hillsville Fire of 1931, marked footprint of county's second jail site, and other buildings. The object listed with the district is a Confederate Monument first erected in 1907 - one of made white bronze (zink alloy).

    On April 26, 1607, 100 English settlers landed here and established the first elective government in English America before pushing up the James River to establish Jamestown.
