Virginia Green is the Commonwealth of Virginia’s campaign to promote environmentally-friendly practices in all aspects of Virginia’s tourism industry. Virginia Green has established "core activities" specific to each sector of tourism, and these practices are considered the required minimum for participation in the program. However, Virginia Green encourages its participants to reduce their environmental impacts in all aspects of their operations, and this profile provides a full list of all their “green” activities. These are the activities that guests / customers can expect to find when they visit this facility.

Brightwood Vineyard and Farm Cottage B&B

Brightwood Vineyard and Farm is a 100-acre working, family farm in Madison County at the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The goal of the farm is to be sustainable both economically and ecologically and it features organic berries, grapes and vegetables as well as meat goats and egg laying hens. The private cottage is newly expanded and renovated with a full kitchen.

Brightwood Vineyard and Farm is committed to environmental excellence and works to minimize environmental impacts whenever possible. Our goal as a diversified small farm is to be sustainable both economically and ecologically. We are committed to providing high quality products to local consumers while being good stewards of the land we gather from.

Eco-Friendly Cottage Features: -A well insulated, energy efficient building shell -Formaldehyde free insulation -Modern wood frame double glazed for low electrical field emissions -Extensive use of metal class wiring for low electrical field emissions -Heat pump with dehumidifier mode -Reused existing structure, locally sourced wood products and reclaimed hardwood floors -Instantaneous water heater -Minimal site disturbance with no erosion runoff into rivers or streams. Sustainable farming practices: -Reduced use of pesticides and other chemical inputs -Certified Organic production for berries, vegetables, wine grapes, herbs and cut flowers -Raising rare/ heritage livestock breeds to conserve genetic diversity -Rotational grazing -Encouraging riparian buffers to restore health of waterways -Good Agricultural Practices to ensure safe, wholesome produce -Contribution of fresh, healthy produce to the local economy

Virginia Green Activities

This facility pledges that they:
Offer optional linen service
- Have signage in each guest room explaining the linen reuse procedures 
- Train housekeeping staff on our process for optional linen service  
- Purchase water- and energy-efficient washers and dryers 
- Use non-phosphate, non-toxic and biodegradable laundry detergents 
- Minimize the use of bleach and chlorinated chemicals 
- Line dry linens whenever possible 

Recycle
- Aluminum cans

- Newspaper 
- Office paper

- Fluorescent lamps 
- Batteries 

Reduce solid waste
- Use bulk soap dispensers instead of individual soaps/shampoos in guest rooms 
- Instruct housekeeping staff to save and reuse unopened items 
- Have an effective food inventory control system to minimize waste 
- Do not use any disposable containers, dishware, cutlery, or cups 
- Use cloth napkins 
- Provide condiments, cream and sugar, etc. in bulk 
- Purchase recycled-content paper-towels and toilet paper 
- Use electronic correspondence and forms when possible 
- Use green cleaning products that are dispensed in bulk 
- Install carpet with sustainable or recycled content and low-VOC adhesives 
- Use latex, low or no-VOC paints 
- Re-use paint thinners 
- Properly recycle and/or dispose of thinners and solvents 
- Perform preventative maintenance on all appliances, HVAC systems, plumbing, and vehicles 
- Minimize use of pesticides and herbicides in landscaping 
- Other Activities: Grow own produce and other foods organically and sustainably on our farm

Use water efficiently
- Perform preventative maintenance to stop drips and leaks 
- Have installed high efficiency dishwashers 
- Have minimized impervious areas (paving, concrete, etc.) 
- Maintain vegetative buffers around streams and ponds 
- Other Activities: Effective landscape and storm water management plans

Conserve energy
- Track overall energy bills 
- Have individual thermostats for each room; ensure they are correctly adjusted 
- Have installed ceiling fans 
- Have installed a high efficiency HVAC system 
- Use natural lighting (i.e., open draperies and raise shades whenever adequate light from windows is available) 
- Use ENERGY STAR qualified appliances (commercial kitchens, heating and cooling, consumer electronics) 
- Use ENERGY STAR qualified office equipment (computers, monitors, copiers, printers, etc.) 
- Other Activities: Thermal rated windows and insulation

Offer a green events package
