Historical Significance
Frontier citizen militias were very active and hard-pressed in protecting the westward- bound frontier during the war for independence. Protecting a flow of settlers coming or going was no small task. Joseph Martin formed his own company, which
defended the Powell Valley Region. After the Revolutionary War, as the danger diminished, the small, Lee County town of Rose Hill was eventually founded around the original fort site.
