Historical Significance
In 1776, the Cherokee nation made a formal alliance with the British crown to fight the western settlers. Lead by their volatile war chief, Dragging Canoe, war parties of Cherokees began to harass Martin's Station, amongst others. By June of 1776, the pressure became so great that Martin and his comrades were forced to retreat, abandoning the station. The little fort remained basically unoccupied until 1780, when it was deemed safe enough to begin another try at settling Powell Valley.
