Historical Significance
The second oldest Lutheran college in America, Roanoke College began in 1842 as the Virginia Collegiate Institute near Staunton. Finding few support there, the school moved in 1847 to Salem, and soon changed its name to Roanoke. Today the picturesque college is considered one of the best small liberal arts colleges in the nation.
