The Virginia Scenic Railway, with its starts and stops in the historic downtown Staunton, is a journey filled with nostalgia and natural beauty. Riding in a restored vintage railcar, passengers are transported through a landscape of deciduous trees, like oaks, birches, poplars, sumacs, and maples. Operated by the Buckingham Branch Railroad, this unique railway experience is not just a trip, but a step back in time to the golden age of rail travel.

As the train continues along, passengers can listen to recorded tidbits of information about historical insights and facts about the towns they pass, the history of trains, and the railroad itself. A blend of scenic beauty, historical narrative, and plenty of charm of vintage railcars makes the Virginia Scenic Railway a memorable way to experience the heart of Virginia.

The Alleghany Special

When you hop on the Alleghany Special, you’re in for a scenic voyage that's nothing short of spectacular! The three-hour round-trip takes you right through the heart of the Shenandoah Valley. With the Blue Ridge Mountains to your east and the Alleghany Mountains to your west, it's a postcard-perfect experience from start to finish.

As the sun rises, the train sets off from Staunton, chugging its way across a landscape of farms and serene pastures. It's like stepping into a living painting, where every turn brings a new, breathtaking view.

The Blue Ridge Flyer

On the other hand, there’s the Blue Ridge Flyer. This train journey heads out in the afternoon, east from Staunton, and then meanders through the picturesque towns of Fishersville and Waynesboro

The highlight? Entering the mile-long Blue Ridge Tunnel! As the train plunges into darkness, anticipation among passengers builds. When the train finally emerges out from the tunnel, breathtaking views captivate every passenger.

The journey ends just west of Charlottesville in the charming town of Ivy before making its way back to Staunton. Departing Thursdays through Sundays, the Blue Ridge Flyer offers a unique way to experience the splendor of the Shenandoah Valley.
