Lovingston became the county seat of Nelson County around 1809 after the courthouse moved from Cabellsville (Colleen) when the new county of Nelson was formed. Today Lovingston remains the focal point of county government and was designated as a historic district in 2005.
The Nelson County Visitor Center is conveniently located beside Route 29 and offers information about the county. A shopping center, library, convenience stores, restaurants, banks, florists, The Village Inn Motel and Orchard House B & B offer services for the residents and visitors to the area. Nearby are three wineries, Democracy Winery, Mountain Cove Vineyard and Winery and Lovingston Winery producing local wines.
