Enjoy the Magic of Appalachian Wineries in Fall

Get out your backpack, hiking boots and mountain bike because it's time to explore Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountains from Abingdon to Damascus along the Virginia Creeper Trail.

Day 1:

Abingdon: Take exit 19 from I-81 towards Damascus to the Abingdon Vineyards and Winery. Then head to one of Virginia’s newest wineries, Vincent’s Vineyard. Try to catch a glimpse of their Aussie herding the sheep in the vineyards. You may want to try the Old Mill Restaurant for dinner. Wind down the day with a restful stay at the Hikers Inn or The St. Paul Suites & Cottages.

Day 2:

Wise: Enjoy a leisurely breakfast at your accommodation, then take the scenic Rte. 72 toward Coeburn! Jefferson National Forest is on your way with some awesome views including Hanging Rock on your left. The Falls of the Little Stony are at the top this somewhat rugged trail - a hike of about 6 miles.  Hint: Drive to the top of the falls and walk down. Turn left at the signs for Guest River Gorge Trail which is a “rails to trails” path including an earlier railroad tunnel for moving coal out of the area at the turn of the century. Enjoy the wines at MountainRose Vineyards and picnic on their patio overlooking the pond and the vineyards. (Call ahead if you need something more substantial than the cheese and cracker special.) Head back to Nickelsville to enjoy the festivities of the world famous Carter Fold, home of June Carter Cash or stop at Natural Tunnel for some of their wonderful outdoor programs before calling it a day.

Day 3:

Trek back to Abingdon to spend the day browsing the Historic District. Among the treasures is Holston Mountain Artisans. You're sure to find a handmade trinket as a souvenir. Grab a casual lunch at 128 Pecan, located in the Historic District of Abingdon right near the Martha Hotel & Spa and the Virginia Creeper Trail before heading back home.
