Fall in Fairfax County

Winter sends locals inside to nest. Spring marks the beginning of tourist season. Summer is synonymous with trips to the nearby DC National Mall. But fall ... fall is when you'll find Fairfax County, Virginia and the surrounding area at its authentic best.

Day 1:

Start your autumn adventure on the southern end of the George Washington Memorial Parkway at the home of our nation's first president. In the fall George Washington's Mount Vernon is a colorful kaleidoscope of mature oaks, red maples and poplars. While visiting the majestic estate in autumn, chances are you'll be able to attend one of the many all-day festivals and special events that have become some of Northern Virginia's favorite traditions.

While you're there, be sure to nourish your body and soul at the Mount Vernon Inn. Go ahead and make reservations at a nearby Fairfax County hotel with discounts found exclusively on Virginia.org.

Day 2:

Begin your second day in Fairfax County by visiting one of Northern Virginia's best kept secrets. Did you know that Meadowlark Botanical Gardens has three distinct native plant collections that showcase Virginia plant life? In October see the Salvia, as well as other native Virginia trees, in their fall color peak while you hike along the mulched nature trails. Meadowlark is known regionally as an excellent place to photograph breathtaking foliage.

After you finish your hike around this spectacular park, take the short drive to Tysons Corner Center where you can find a variety of cuisines to dine on.

Day 3:

Your third day should include a trip to a national treasure. Great Falls National Park is a meticulously maintained area in northern Fairfax County that draws visitors the world over. The scene you'll find from the three main overlooks at the park include the roaring water of the falls in the foreground while the burning reds and burnt oranges of the trees paint a picturesque background that will be in your memory's museum forever.

The town of Great Falls has great dining options after you have finished viewing the falls and exploring the visitor's center to learn more about the area's history. Dante Ristorante is an example of the outstanding culinary fare and simple elegance you'll find throughout Great Falls.
