Get outside and play!
Families can immerse themselves in creative, outdoor play at NatureRidge, Staunton’s first natural playground located at Montgomery Hall Park. Using mostly natural elements and materials, the new playground features an elevated zig zag, stump steps and rock quarry, mud kitchen, wooden ship and elevated sandbox allowing kids of all ages and abilities to explore, build and experiment.
Another great option is Gypsy Hill Park, this sprawling 214-acre park boasts a duck pond, public golf course, a skate-boarding park, two playgrounds, public swimming pool, horse-shoe pits, tennis courts, a dog park, a stocked lake used for fishing and plenty of picnic tables. At the main entrance of the park is the start of a 1.3-mile circular loop that serves as a designated play street and is perfect for pedestrians and bicyclists of all ages.
The Frontier Culture Museum tells the story of early immigrants and their American descendants, through traditional rural buildings originally from England, Germany, Ireland, West Africa, and America are rebuilt here. These farmsteads come alive as costumed interpreters demonstrate the lifestyles of early settlers to the American colonies. Perfect for all ages.
Learn about the life and legacy of our 28th president at the Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library and Museum. Tour the museum, where you can see artifacts of Woodrow’s life in Staunton as well as an extensive collection of relics from his time in the Oval Office including his 1919 Pierce-Arrow limousine. Ideal for Ages 7 and up.
Take a tour of the American Shakespeare Center’s Blackfriars Playhouse. Get a behind-the-scenes look at the world’s only re-creation of Shakespeare’s indoor theatre as you go onstage, behind the stage and even under the stage! Compliment your tour with a performance to round-out your Shakespearean experience. Ideal for Ages 7 and up.
Be sure and build in time for browsing the many hobby shops, artisan workshops, and other unique places you will find along the way like Sunspots Studios with live glass blowing and the independent toy store, Pufferbellies. And no trip to Staunton is complete without a stop for scratch-made gelato at Split Banana.
Insider’s Tip: The Downtown Trolley is a great way to explore Staunton. Hop on and off anywhere along the route for only 25¢ per ride. Trolley stops at Gypsy Hill Park and many of the attractions on this itinerary.
