From May to December, The Blue Ridge Fruit Loop offers unprocessed food in a beautiful locale. Nelson County’s orchards are a popular destination year-round. Everyone can enjoy the hands-on experience of fresh, pick-your-own food. Visit the farm market that supplies foliage for The White House Rose Garden, gaze at spectacular views of the Blue Ridge Mountains, and even tie the knot at one of Nelson County’s orchards, farms, or produce stands. In addition, choose from an array of apples, Asian pears, blackberries, blueberries, cherries, nectarines, peaches, plums, strawberries, sweet cider, fruit jams, jellies, and more! Another great Nelson County Orchard is Dickie Brothers Orchard in Roseland, which offers pick-your-own apples. Dickie Brothers grows amazing fresh produce, including Peaches, Nectarines, Raspberries, Blackberries, Plums, Pears, Pumpkins, Sweet Potatoes, Corn, and much more!
Nelson is in bloom during the spring! Bring the kids to pick delicious strawberries at Seaman’s Orchard, which opens for business around springtime each year. A major bonus is the view of the verdant valley below. If you want to visit a market afterwards, visit Saunders Brothers Farm Market in Piney River. Saunders Brothers is nationally known, having recently supplied the White House with the Rose Gardens’ boxwoods. The rustic retail market is a resource for farm-fresh fruit, jarred goods & other treats, plus annuals, perennials & shrubs. Check out the Antique Farm Equipment Museum if you’d like to see how the land was farmed long ago.
If you’re looking for refreshment, visit one of Nelson County’s three cideries, all of which use local ingredients to produce crisp cider. Blue Toad Hard Cider was literally “born in a barn,” and the folks at Bryant’s Small Batch Cider ferment their cider at a low temperature until it is dry. Bold Rock Hard Cider creates unique hard seltzers as well. For an inventive and tasty meal made with local ingredients, check out Wild Wolf Brewing Company, which serves Wild Wolf’s craft beers. Located in a renovated schoolhouse, the property offers a pleasant experience for diners. Take a walk and view the goldfish pond and waterfall. Feel free to stop in and fill your growler before you leave town. What if you decide not to leave town? Stay at one of Nelson County’s many inns, bed & breakfasts, cabins, or campsites.
