Start your day at one of many locally owned breakfast spots such as Skip’s or Red & Mae's. Offering up delicious, home-style cooking, you’re sure to enjoy the traditional southern choices of these two “mom & pop” restaurants.
After breakfast, pack your gear and head out on the Smith River. Whether you want a short trip or a full day float, eleven public canoe ramps are available for use by paddlers. If you enjoy whitewater, canoe or kayak the river during peak generation from Philpott Dam. If a relaxing flat water paddle is more your speed, put your boat or tube in further downstream.
If you prefer the calm of flat water, head over to Beaver Creek Reservoir for the day. The man-made lake covers about 175 acres that allows for fishing and boating. There are also canoe rentals, picnic areas, trails, and other amenities that the entire family can enjoy.
After a day on the water, don’t let the fun end when the sun goes down. Enjoy dining and nightlife at local favorites such as Wild Magnolia, Shindig, or Hugo's. Be sure to check our events calendar before your visit for special events!
Nestled among the rolling foothills of Virginia's Blue Ridge, Philpott Lake is a scenic wonderland. Start at the Philpott Lake Visitor Center to learn more about the lake’s history, campgrounds, beaches and more. Be sure to get a bird’s eye view the lake from the overlook located just past the visitor center.
Now it’s time to get out on the water. Philpott Lake offers boaters and paddlers nine boat launches to put in to the water. Once you’re on the lake, you will find a variety of places to explore including hidden waterfalls, scenic rock outcrops and three islands. Deer Island, the largest of the three, offers nightly camp site rentals that are only accessible via boat.
Philpott is also home to eight different campgrounds for lake goers to enjoy. Each offers a variety of amenities, so it’s easy to pick the perfect place to spend a night under the stars. Day use permits allow users to enjoy the lake without staying overnight. Dive right in at one of six beach areas, hike or bike the many trails around the lake, fish for your next big catch, observe local wildlife and more!
