In 2004, tragedy struck as a fire devastated three neighboring businesses in Downtown Blackstone, leaving a gaping hole filled with ash and rubble. In the aftermath of this disaster, our community was uncertain as to what would become of this space. Today, after years of hard work and dedication, there lies a vibrant outdoor and people-centered green space known as Blackstone’s Town Square. Our LOVEwork is a testament to our community coming together and working to rebuild and reimagine our historic downtown because love was the driving force behind our resiliency in the face of devastation.
These handcrafted timber posts stand proud in Blackstone’s Town Square for residents and visitors alike to view and embrace the loving atmosphere in the heart of Blackstone’s Historic Business District. Depending on one’s visit, the “O” will feature a seasonal theme or design throughout the year, complimenting the other red mahogany stained letters. Visitors are encouraged to take photographs of the LOVEwork and help our community spread the love throughout their travels!
Visitors are encouraged to take photos with the LOVEwork and share with loved ones on Facebook at www.Facebook.com/VirginiaisforLovers or on Twitter with the special hashtag #LOVEVA. A complete list of the LOVEwork locations is at www.Virginia.org/LOVE.
