Newport News now has its own set of LOVE letters, spelling out the word L-O-V-E with two extra letters at the end: N-N, which, of course, stands for Newport News! Created by Custom Metal Fabrications, Inc., the letters are made of aluminum, making them lighter in weight and easier to move throughout the city from one event to the next. The letters were created as part of the “Virginia Is For Lovers” statewide marketing campaign in which visitors are asked to take photos with various LOVE letters found throughout the Commonwealth and to share their photos online.
In Newport News, visitors and residents alike have also been known to take photos with the public art found in our “Art & Sculpture Expressions of Creativity” driving-tour brochure. Since 1919, when the original Victory Arch was dedicated, Newport News has had a proud heritage of outdoor treasures for the public to enjoy. Today, more than two dozen works of art are on display throughout the city. The collection ranges from “The Unfinished March” in the city’s Southeast Community to “The Handshake” marking the entrance to City Center at Oyster Point and “Healing Christ” on the grounds of Mary Immaculate Hospital.
