The Smithfield & Isle of Wight County Tourism Bureau held a contest for the design of the LOVEwork in the Spring of 2017. They received 38 entries, including 10 from Smithfield High School where one of the teachers used the contest as an assignment. The winning design was created by Meagan Pugh, a graduate of Smithfield High, the Governor’s School for the Arts and Virginia Commonwealth University’s Fine Arts Department. Here is Meagan’s description of her design: "Inspired by what we are best known for…Ham, well Bacon, I envision our LOVEwork to be in the 'pop art' vein and interactive. Visitors can take photos their friends and family 'taking a big bite' out of a slice of bacon (while taking a big bite out of all there is to do in Smithfield). We might even be the world’s largest bacon statue!"
Visitors are encouraged to take photos with the LOVEworks and share with loved ones on Facebook at www.Facebook.com/VirginiaisforLovers or on Twitter with the special hashtags #LOVEVA. A complete list of the LOVEwork locations is at www.Virginia.org/LOVE.
