Everyone needs an escape from the daily grind, and Stafford offers some of the best all-American weekend getaways without great expenses! Sojourn in Stafford for a guilt-free fall getaway full of fun, flavor and fall foliage!
Be daring. Turn off your cell phone, and turn on your GPS system of choice to find the most scenic route through the countryside to Stafford. Arrive at Aquia Pines Campground. Check in to one of the cutest little log cabins you’ve ever seen, or pitch your tent at a rustic campsite.
Before the sun goes down, play a quick round of mini-golf, then tee-off for dinner. Family Pizzeria is the perfect hangout, family owned and operated for decades. Dine in with the locals, then go for a spin next door at Cavalier Family Skating Center to work off your calories.
Rise early for a quick bite at Before N After Cafe! Slip on down to George Washington’s Ferry Farm for a walk through the garden to see what the Washington family grew during their time on this frontier farm. Peek into the archaeology exhibit, and try your arm at throwing a stone across the river, just like young George did!
After working up an appetite, head north to Potomac Point Winery for some lunch and wine, or in late September for the annual Harvest Festival for food, wine, hayrides, scarecrow making, pumpkins and more!
As the sun goes down in the vineyard, make one last stop at Bella Café for a “brainfreeze” – a delicious shake you’ll not soon forget. Then, it’s sweet dreams for the night.
After sleeping in a little, roll out of bed, and roll up your sleeping bag. Start the day with a hearty breakfast at one of Stafford's many restaurants.
Attend a morning service in a National Historic Landmark – Aquia Church. Then take a scenic Sunday drive out to Aquia Landing – a famous Civil War Trails and Network to Freedom site which offers a beautiful view of the Potomac River (again – don’t forget your binoculars!).
Before heading out of town, stop by Gari Melchers’ Home & Studio. Take a walk through the gardens or the woodland trail to admire the beautiful fall colors. Take a tour of the house and gallery as well of this famous American artist.
Pop down the street to Amy’s Café Down by the River in historic Falmouth for a final bite to eat before hitting the road.
