A slow drive on VA-6 will take you through rolling countryside, friendly small towns, and some great eats.
Start your trip off with a bang at Short Pump Town Center near Richmond’s west end. This bustling open-air lifestyle and entertainment center has 140 upscale shops and a special train themed play area for kids. Once you’ve had enough shopping excitement, head west to Goochland.
If you’re in town on a Saturday morning in May through October, don’t miss the Goochland Farmers Market at Grace Episcopal Church. The smell of fresh fruits, vegetables, and baked goods wafts through the air as children run and play around the 19th century grounds. About an hour down the road, the pretty town of Scottsville has similar period architecture and attractions.
Years of local history are on display in Canal Basin Square, a historic park, and Scottsville Museum. If you like boats, consider crossing the river on the Hatton Ferry, one of the last remaining hand-poled ferries in the country.
Continuing your drive west, consider a wine tasting in the mountains at Afton Mountain Vineyards, Flying Fox Vineyard, Cardinal Point Vineyard and Winery, or Veritas Winery. Enjoying a glass of wine and/or a picnic overlooking panoramic views of the Blue Ridge Mountains is perfect end to this relaxing journey on VA-6.
