Escape the hustle and bustle of the D.C. metropolitan area with a scenic drive on George Washington Memorial Parkway. This peaceful drive offers fantastic views of the Potomac River and the national monuments in D.C.; plus, there are many historic locations, diverse parks, and picturesque overlooks to explore.
Begin your journey at Mt. Vernon, the home of President Washington. Featuring George and Martha Washington's mansion, a host of colonial era buildings, lovely gardens, a working distillery, a kid-friendly museum, and a charming restaurant, this historic estate is fun for the whole family.
Next consider visiting the US Marine Corps War Memorial in Arlington, which is dedicated to all Marines who have given their lives in the defense of the United States since 1775. The grounds offer a stunning panorama of the Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial, and Capitol Building and, during the summer, the US Marine Corps holds unforgettable Sunset Parades on Tuesday evenings.
When you reach the end of the parkway, don’t miss Great Falls Park, home to The Patowmack Canal. Hike along the dramatic cliff tops of Mather Gorge, bike one of the trails, or, if you’re feeling adventurous, go whitewater boating on the river rapids.
The driving George Washington Parkway will take you about an hour without stops, but it could easily take a whole day to enjoy all the great places along the way.
