Enjoy a leisurely ride along the scenic James River from Richmond’s bustling downtown to the peaceful countryside. Whether by car on Route 5 or by bike or foot on The Virginia Capital Trail, the variety of exciting sights along this route won’t disappoint.
After leaving Richmond, head to Charles City County to see the centuries old James River Plantations. Berkeley, Shirley, and Sherwood Forest plantations offer walking tours of their spectacularly preserved antebellum houses and beautifully manicured grounds. If you want to see what the area looks like in its natural state, Chickahominy Wildlife Management Area is a great next stop.
Wildlife such as ospreys, bald eagles, deer, and turkeys roam free at Chickahominy, so have your camera and patience ready. When you’re ready for a snack, consider stopping at nearby Chickahominy Riverfront Park. With two outdoor swimming pools, a boat ramp, boat rentals, a fishing pier, a playground, picnic shelters, and a small store, there’s fun for everyone at this park.
The Capital Trail ends at the historic Jamestown Trailhead, where your group can continue enjoying a wide variety of activities on the James River – from trails to beaches to riding the Jamestown Ferry.
