Skyline Drive is a scenic roadway that winds through the picturesque mountains and valleys of Shenandoah National Park. Along the way, stop at a visitor center for some Ranger time, explore over 500 miles of hiking trails, and snap a photo at one or more of the 75 outlooks. While this is a great year-round drive, autumn is the best time of the year to visit because of the crisp air and fall foliage.
Starting at Front Royal and heading south, be sure to stop at Dickey Ridge visitor center for exhibits, picnic grounds, and helpful Rangers. For a one of a kind cave experience, venture a couple miles off Skyline Drive, to Luray Caverns. With 10 stories high ceilings, a car museum, garden maze, and organ performances that make rocks sing, there is something for everyone to enjoy.
Continuing south on Skyline Drive, Skyland Resort offers mountain lodging and a spectacular sunset dining experience in their restaurant. Their fresh, sustainable products delight your taste buds and highlight the delicious bounty of the Shenandoah.
After eating your fill of fried chicken, local trout, blackberry lemonade, and fruit cobbler, consider an 8-mile roundtrip hiking adventure to the summit of Old Rag for panoramic views and/or explore the valley at Big Meadows.
At the end of the road, take I-64 toward Staunton or Richmond, or stay straight onto the Blue Ridge Parkway for more beautiful scenery.
