Situated alongside the C & O Railway, Afton was once a mecca for tourists who escaped the cities to enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The Claudius Crozet Blue Ridge Tunnel, a major engineering feat completed in 1869, provided a railway through the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Atop Afton Mountain is the entry to the Blue Ridge Parkway and the Shenandoah National Park. The Appalachian Trail, and Route 250 and I- 64 cross at Rockfish Gap with scenic overlooks that provide a sweeping view into the Rockfish Valley. Swannanoa, a 1912 Italianate marble palace, offers limited weekend visiting hours.
The community of Afton extends along Virginia Scenic Byways - Routes 6 and 151 (Nelson 151) with several wineries, breweries and a cidery offering their own unique spirits.
