Eastern Shore State Parks
Discover the only state park located on the Eastern Shore of Virginia, Kiptopeke State Park is a coastal paradise just south of Cape Charles on the Chesapeake Bay.
Kiptopeke State Park
Kiptopeke State Park was named in honor of the young king of the Accawmack Indians who befriended early settlers to the area — Kiptopeke means "Big Water." The park is a prime spot to watch bird migrations as well as view The Concrete Fleet of 9 sunken ships just off the coast.
Originally commissioned by the U.S. Maritime Commission during World War II, the ships were brought to Kiptopeke Beach in 1948 and sunk purposefully to protect the Chesapeake Bay ferry terminal during severe weather. Today the ships are an aquatic attraction for both marine life and visitors, offering an intriguing display of decay and holes large enough to paddle your kayak through. Don't miss a visit to this unique spot!
