Halifax rests on the North Carolina- Virginia border right in the middle of all Virginia has to offer. The county was established in 1752 and named after George Montague-Dunk, second Earl of Halifax. One of its most popular destinations is Berry Hill Resort which started as a plantation in 1803. When you visit today you see how the present was influenced by the past and can see for yourself how people lived at the time. The Tobacco Heritage Trail is another popular location and can be found behind Berry Hill, along the Dan River. It is beloved by hikers, bikers, and equestrians. Though still in construction, when finished it should be 170 miles and connect 5 counties.
Many trails area available to travel through to learn more about how the Civil War shaped the county as well as the nation. Lee’s Retreat Civil War Driving Trail, Staunton River Battlefield State Park, and the Civil Rights in Education Heritage Trail are all fantastic choices to pick from. The county is also known for its events with NASCAR races, water skiing, outdoor sculpture farm, and art galleries. Don’t miss out on the Halifax County Fair or the Virginia Cantaloupe Festival and be sure to be in town for the annual Bluegrass, Barbecue and Brew Festival where music and history meet.
