Mathews County is located in the Chesapeake Bay region of Virginia, on the eastern tip of the Middle Peninsuala. The second smallest county in Virginia, Mathews features more than 200 miles of shoreline! It is bordered by the Chesapeake Bay, Mobjack Bay and the Piankatank River. One of the highlights of Mathews County is the New Point Comfort Lighthouse, which marks the entrance to Mobjack Bay.
The Narrows Marina on Gwynn's Island offers watersports, and
four other marinas are in the community.
History buffs can find an abundance of colonial and Civil War sites to explore. Mathews Court House Square is a collection of 18-century and 19th-century buildings along with an active historical society. Its close proximitey to Virginia's Historic Triange -- Jamestown, Williamsburg and Yorktown -- offers addition incentive to visit this coastal community.
Visitors can take advantage of numerous self-guided trails as well as enjoy experienced trail guides on the county's birding, bicycling and driving tours.
