Nelson County is in the Central Virginia region midway between Charlottesville and Lynchburg and is bounded by the James River on east and the Blue Ridge Mountains north and west. It's home to orchards, wineries and the 10,800-acreWintergreen Resort, a year-around resort offering downhill skiing, mountain biking, horseback riding, golf and tennis. It is one of only five resorts south of New York to offer a 1,000-foot vertical drop!
Other recreational assets include a part of the Appalachian
Trail to the top of Crabtree Falls, which is the
highest cascading waterfall in the Eastern USA. The scenic Blue Ridge
Parkway goes through 30 miles of Nelson County, too.
Nelson County is where Earl Hamner, creator of the popular television show, The Walton's, was born. There's a museum exhibiting sets from the show as well as props and other Walton's memorabilia. The Earl Hamner character was "John Boy."
Nelson County's apple orchards are popular destinations in the fall. See beautiful foliage, pick apples with the kids, and purchase some homemade apple butter to take home.
