First inhabited by native American Indians of the Nadowa tribe, Nottoway County was visited by explorers and traders as far back as 1650. Though first a part of Amelia County it became its own county in 1788, and became very important during the Civil War with the “Battle of the Grove” when the rail line in Nottoway was fought over. During World War II Fort Pickett was created in the county and is one of the best training locations for the military in the east and is currently headquarters to the state’s National Guard. Though a small area, with only three towns, the people are very proud of their home and provide a most homespun welcome to newcomers.
Come on into town and choose a festival to attend, like the Blackstone Arts and Crafts Festival after Labor Day or Burkefest before Halloween. Choose to stay in any of the several bed and breakfasts or motels in the area and make sure to check out one of the nearly two dozen restaurants in the county. While you’re there visit one of the historic buildings like Schwartz Tavern or the County Courthouse. Nottoway is packed with historic homes and structures waiting to be seen.
