Go "on location" when you visit the sites where movies were made in Virginia. Walk where the stars have walked, and perhaps see some set remnants along the way. Just a few of Virginia's recent productions include:

  • Harriet filmed in Virginia in fall and winter of 2018, spending time in Richmond, Powhatan, Cumberland, Petersburg, Mathews and several other localities.
  • Season 7 of the Showtime series Homeland began filming in Virginia in fall 2017, and continued through early spring of 2018. The Emmy-winning CIA thriller stars Claire Danes and Mandy Patinkin, and has previously filmed across the globe.
  • Loving, the story of Mildred and Richard Loving, is a film about an important moment in our Commonwealth’s history. The Lovings were married in Washington, D.C., in 1958. Five weeks later, they were arrested at 2 a.m. on July 11 in their bedroom, where their marriage certificate hung on the wall. At the time, Virginia was one of 24 states that barred marriage between races. This film chronicles their story to break those barriers. The entirety of this important work was shot here in Virginia, throughout 11 different localities.
  • This powerful medical drama produced by PBS is set during the Civil War and is based on events that actually took place in Alexandria, Virginia. The first season of the series was filmed in Central Virginia, with Richmond locations playing the hotel-turned-hospital, and Petersburg supplying the remaining interior and exterior sets.
  • Based on the novel of the same name, Big Stone Gap, takes place in 1978. Filmed entirely in Big Stone Gap, Virginia, it centers around Ave Maria Mulligan (Ashley Judd), the local pharmacist who, at age 40, has officially become the town’s old maid, at least in her own mind.
  • AMC's "TURN" is a layered, character driven spy thriller that unravels the untold story of America’s first spy ring. Set during the Revolutionary War, we are taken behind the battlefront to a shadow war fought by everyday heroes.
  • Steven Spielberg's LINCOLN, starring Daniel Day-Lewis, was filmed solely in Virginia. Inspired by the book Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln by Doris Kearns-Goodwin, the film focuses on the last four months of Lincoln's life and his quest to pass the 13th Amendment.
  • Starring Paul Giamatti and Laura Linney, John Adams is a seven-part epic miniseries that explores American history through one of its greatest founding fathers.
  • Starring Shia LaBeouf and Megan Fox, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is the sequel to the highly successful 2007 blockbuster Transformers.
  • Starring Jude Law, Nicole Kidman and Renée Zellweger, Cold Mountain is a film adaptation of Charles Frazier's best-selling Civil War novel of the same name.
  • Starring Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey, Dirty Dancing takes place in the Catskill Mountains at a sleepy resort. Mountain Lake Lodge in Pembroke, VA is the actual resort and is far from sleepy.
  • Starring Robert Duvall, Jeff Daniels and Stephen Lang, Gods and Generals is based on a book by the same title, authored by Jeff Shaara. The movie portrays the battles preceding Gettysburg.
