McAfee Knob is one of the most photographed spots on the Appalachian Trail (A.T.) as it winds its way through Virginia.  The Knob has an almost 270 degree panorama of the Catawba Valley and North Mountain to the West, Tinker Cliffs to the North and the Roanoke Valley to the East.

It is a steady climb of around 1700' in about 4.4 miles to the Knob from the VA311 parking area. On a clear day you will have some of the best views in the Southern Shenandoah Valley. Due to its popularity you will not be alone on this hike, but the overhang of McAfee Knob and its views make up for the lack of solitude.

The main parking lot at the McAfee Knob trailhead is closed for construction. Hikers will still have access to the Appalachian Trail at this location but will need to stay in designated areas outside the active construction area. There will be no parking at the trailhead lot during bridge construction. Permanent parking capacity will be restored once bridge construction is completed by late 2024. Alternative parking is available at the Catawba Sustainability Center and along some shoulders on Route Starting in 864 (Old Catawba Road). Drivers should pay close attention and only park where designated by signs. Towing is enforced. The McAfee Knob Trailhead shuttle service is active and encouraged for use. The shuttle runs on a continuous loop from the Interstate 81 exit 140 park and ride lot to the McAfee Knob trailhead. There are four additional on-demand sites available throughout the City of Salem and along Route 311. Reservations are encouraged but walk-up service is also available.
