Art lovers and NASCAR fans will love seeing the Dust to Glory mural located inside the Gunter Automotive showroom. A fan of NASCAR racing, former dealership owner, Jim Mills, was inspired by the book “Dust to Glory” to commission a set of murals for the interior of the showroom. Local artist Charles Hill used the book and photographs of drivers both past and present to create the large scale scenes which span about 120 feet.
(Left Upper) "Dust to Glory: History of Martinsville Speedway.” Painted in 2011, shows Martinsville Speedway’s transition from dirt track in the early 60’s to a paved NASCAR speedway. This section features Wendell Scott (first African American driver), Richard Petty, Dale Earnhardt, Jeff Gordon and many others that have raced at Martinsville Speedway.
(Left Bottom) “Founding Fathers.” Painted in 2011, depicts the Ridgeway Clocks Grandfather Clock awarded to the winner of each race at Martinsville Speedway. The clock is surrounded by Clay Earles, Bill France and Clay Campbell.
(Right Bottom) “Martinsville Hotdog.” Painted in 2012, is based off the famous Norman Rockwell painting “The Runaway.” It features a fictional diner and showcases the vintage Martinsville Speedway Hotdog sign.
(Right Upper) “Wall of Fame.” Painted in 2012, depicts some of the legendary drivers that raced at Martinsville Speedway including Louise Smith the first female driver in NASCAR.
