On June 11 and 12, 1864, US General Sheridan was sent by General Grant to cut the railroad between Louisa and Gordonsville to disrupt Confederate supplies for Richmond. CSA General Hampton was sent by General Lee to intercept. Sheridan's cavalry, coming from Trevilians, attacked Hampton who had taken position across the Louisa-Gordonsville Road. A bloody engagement followed. General Fitz Lee joined Hampton, driving Sheridan's cavalry back, retiring eastward. See the markers on the south side of US 33.
