St. Luke's was built in 1844 in the Classical Revival style of architecture. The church and the cemetery are on the National Register of Historic Places. The oldest grave in the cemetery is dated 1846. The brother and nephew of General Robert E. Lee are buried here, as well as, many Civil War veterans. In March of 1861, the recently established Powhatan troops camped at St. Luke's while awaiting orders to join the war effort.
