Just about everyone can remember where they were when they first heard of the events of September 11, 2001. Many of us were at work, had just dropped the kids off at school, or were en route to other activities for a regular Tuesday morning. But that day was anything but ordinary, especially for Arlington, as hijacked American Airlines flight 77 circled Arlington and then crashed into the Pentagon. 184 lives were lost on that site that day. The National 9/11 Pentagon Memorial serves as a moving tribute to the lives lost aboard the plane and inside the Pentagon that day.
Visitors can cross through a tunnel on foot from Pentagon City to the memorial site on the secure Pentagon reservation, where they are met by a series of benches, each one representing one of the individuals who died at the Pentagon on September 11. An accompanying cell phone audio tour tells the story of how that day unfolded with personal accounts from survivors and emergency personnel.
The Pentagon Memorial is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week for visitors to pay their respects and remember the events of September 11.
